Shabad 45: Jeo Jeo Naama Har Gun Uchrai

 

Bhagat Namdev Ji (29 October, 1270 - 1350) was born in the state of Maharashtra village of Naras-Vamani, in Satara district (presently called Narsi Namdev). His father was a calico printer/tailor.

Bhagat Namdev is referred to as a "Cẖẖīpė". This refers to Bhagat ji's profession as a printer of cloth. Chhippas were calico printers/artists and used to decorate, colour and print textiles with art work. 

Bhagat Namdev's contemporaries looked upon him solely as a low caste man. However, he was blessed with a unique deep love for, and firm faith in, the Divine. Consequently, he happened to rule over the hearts of God-loving people. Guru Ram Das ji acknowledges his uniquely beautiful love for the Divine and refers to it in one of his hymns.

This implies that being aware of Namdev's selfless love, God turned his back on the higher caste Khatris and Brahmins and embraced low caste Namdev, a calico printer. Guru Arjan Sahib ji held him in such high esteem as he declared that Namdev was one with God because he ever remembered Him.

For such a pious soul, none was alien. However, this innocent pious and unprejudiced attitude, coupled with universal admiration; became the cause of jealousy for the high caste Brahmins. Consequently, Namdev had to bear the brunt of their displeasure at every step. So much so that once this pious being, who was ever mystically attained with God, was thrown out of the temple for being a low caste. This happened in the temple of Nag Nath in the village of Aund; situated in Dist. Parbani, in Maharashtra. It was in this temple that Namdev, blisfully fixated on Naam, wanted to sing hymns in eulogy of God. The so-called high caste preists in the temple snatched castanets from him and threw him out. This humble devotee of God, had heartfelt sadness at this. In fact, due to the union between God and His humble devotee, it is said that through Divine intervention, the temple moved to face him, despite his sitting outside. This incident is reffered to in a hymn in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

हे संत जनों  !   जैसे-जैसे भक्त नाम देव जी अपने प्रभु हरी जी की महिमा-गुणगान के गुण गाते जाते हैं । 

As NAAM DEV uttered the Glorious Praises of the LORD.

 

    भगत जनां को, देहोरा फिरै ॥

            Bhagat Jana Ko, Dehora Firay.

प्रभु की ऐसी आश्चर्यजनक लीला होती है कि अपने भक्त की खातिर, प्रभु का मन्दिर अपने सेवक नामदेव की तरफ ही घूमकर सामने आ जाता है ।

The temple turned around to face the LORD's humble devotee.

 

     हसत खेलत तेरे, देहोरे आऐआ ॥

           Hasat Khelat, TERE Dehore Aayeya.

भक्त नाम देव जी कहते हैं --

हे मेरे प्रभू --  मैं तो बड़े चाव से हंसते खेलते हुए आपके मन्दिर में आया था ।

Laughing and playing, I came to YOUR Temple.

 

     भक्ति करत नामा, पकड़ उठाऐआ ॥

            Bhagti Karat, NAAMA Pakarh Uthayeya.

 हे मेरे प्रभू -- मैं आपकी भक्ति पूजा कर रहा था, कि इन पंडितों नें मुझ नामे को बाँह से पकड़ कर मन्दिर में से उठा कर बाहर फेंक दिया ।  क्योंकि यह लोग मेरी जाति 'हीनड़ी' को छोटी जात समझते हैं ।

While NAAM DEV was worshipping, he was grabbed and driven out.

 

     'हीनड़ी' जात मेरी, जादम राऐआ ॥

            Hinarhi Jaat Meri, Jaadam Rayeya.

हे प्रभु  !  मुझे सभी कहते हैं कि मैं बहुत ही नीच सामाजिक जाति 'हीनड़ी' जात का हूँ ।

I am of a low social class, O LORD.

 

     छीपे के जनम, काहे को आऐआ ॥

           Chhipe Ke Janam, Kahe Ko Aayeya.

हे प्रभु  !   मैं छींबे (धोबी) 'हीनड़ी' नीच जाति वालों के घर में क्यों पैदा हो गया ?

Why was I born into a family of fabric dyers?

 

     लै कमली, चलेओ पलटाऐ ॥

           Lai Kamli, Chaleyo Paltaye.

भक्त नामदेव जी कहते हैं -

आखिर बेइज्जत हो कर मैंने अपनी कंबली उठाई और मन्दिर के सामने से उठ कर वापस चल पड़ा ।

I picked up my blanket and went back.

 

     देहोरै पाछै, बैठा जाऐ ॥

           Dehoray Pachhay, Baitha Jaye.

अब मैं मन्दिर के बाहर से उठ कर, मन्दिर के पीछे की तरफ जा कर बैठ गया और प्रभु की महिमा-गुणगान गाने लगा ।

To sit behind the temple.

 

     जिओ जिओ नामा, हर गुण उचरै ॥

          Jio Jio NAAMA, HAR Gunn Ucharay.

हे संत जनों  !   जैसे-जैसे भक्त नाम देव जी अपने प्रभु हरी जी की महिमा-गुणगान के गुण गाते जाते हैं ।

Note नोट: 

भक्त नाम देव जी के बारे में सभी गांव वासी जानते थे कि नामदेव धोबी है, और शूद्र है । शूद्रों को मन्दिर में जाने की मनाही थी ।  किसी दिन प्रभु की बँदगी की मौज में भक्त नामदेव जी मन्दिर में चले गए । मन्दिर में से ऊँची जाति वालों ने भक्त नामदेव को बाँह से पकड़ कर बाहर निकाल दिया ।  यह एक दिन की घटना ही बताती है कि नामदेव जी ना मन्दिर जाया करते थे और ना ही शूद्र होने की वजह से उच्च जाति वालों की तरफ से उन्हें वहाँ जाने की आज्ञा थी ।  यह तो एक दिन प्रभु की मौज में मन्दिर चले गए और आगे से जब धक्के नसीब हुए, तो प्रभु नें मन्दिर को ही ऊंची जाति वालों की तरफ से घुमा कर सच्चे भाव और समर्पण वाले भक्त नामदेव जी की तरफ कर दिया ।
